Common Questions About Omey Island & Connemara Walks

Answers to what retirees ask us most about tidal timing, fitness levels, and coastal exploration

Coastal cliffs and sandy beach at Omey Island

We time our walks 2-3 hours after low tide, when the sand causeway is firm and fully exposed, but before the tide starts returning. This gives you a safe 3-4 hour window to explore the island, visit the early Christian church ruins, and enjoy the wild beaches without rushing back.

Absolutely. Our Omey Island walks are mostly flat across sand and coastal paths — no steep climbs. The Connemara shoreline programme offers options ranging from 4 to 8 miles daily, so you pick what suits you. We also build in rest stops at scenic spots where you can sit and take in the views.

We check tide tables weeks in advance and monitor conditions on the morning of each walk. Our guides are locals who've walked this route for decades — they read the water, weather, and sand patterns. We never cross if there's any doubt, and we always have a backup plan. Tides here are predictable; we respect them rather than fight them.

Waterproof walking shoes or boots with good grip are essential — sand and seaweed can be slippery. Bring a light waterproof jacket, sun cream, and plenty of water. We recommend layers since coastal weather changes fast. We've got a full coastal walking gear guide on our site with a detailed packing list.

We run both. Most of our scheduled walks are small groups (8-12 people), which is perfect for meeting other active retirees with similar interests. If you prefer a private experience with family or friends, we can arrange that too — just get in touch and we'll quote you.

For scheduled group walks, we usually recommend booking 2-3 weeks ahead so we can plan numbers and arrange transport if needed. For private guides or custom dates, the earlier the better — give us at least 4 weeks if possible. Last-minute spots do open up, so it's worth asking.
